At flotilla sailing You will have all the advantages of independent sailing, plus the support of experienced help if you need it. You are skipper of your own yacht and each day's activities are yours to decide will you sail hard or simply idle towards the next port soaking up the sun on the way.
Many of less experienced sailors appreciate the security of having expert help to hand and the opportunity to learn a little more. One of yacht accompanies each flotilla ready to help out with itineraries and navigation (including finding that ruined fort or the best local taverna), sort out problems with unfamiliar equipment, introduce you to new friends or take your mooring lines at the quay.If you want advice or assistance experienced flotilla skippers and hostesses are on hand to provide just that.
If you have never been on a sailing holidays before, you may be wondering what actually happens on a flotilla. The first things to do after arriving is familiarise yourself with your yacht and its equipment. Your flotilla skipper and hostess will show you where everything is and explain the workings of fridge, echo-sounder, radio and other fittings.
There are usually 10 yachts on flotillas so you will find plenty of people to meet without feeling swamped. You will soon make new friends over a glass or two of wine - while children are busy forging firm friendships with other young people from a host of different countries.
Next morning we start with the main briefing. The flotilla skipper helps you get the feel of things and teach you about any unfamiliar aspects, for example: operating the roller-furling sails or using anchor.
For the first day or two the flotilla tends to sail in a group, as people get accustomed to the yacht and the relaxed atmosphere.
Each morning begins with the skippers' briefing, when the flotilla leads gives you comprehensive details of that day's destination, charter of the area, suggestions for good sailing en route, navigational hazards to watch out for and any of the points or informations you may require. Your hostess can recommend good restaurants, give trip for shopping and refer to cultural sights of the area.
