About ALGHERO harbour in SARDINIA in Italy

The name of the town is supposed to derive from the way Sardinian people called its bay - "s'alighera" (the seaweed spot) - due to the great quantity of seaweed accumulated by the movement of the weaves. Artistically and culturally rich, with its characteristic historical center, Alghero is just a few miles from the wonderful bay of Porto Conte, a place well sheltered from the wind and facing the splendid Capo Caccia, a headland which hosts the famous Grotte di Nettuno (Neptune Grotto).

After a few miles sailing North along the coast we find Stintino (30 miles), the island of Asinara, La Maddalena group of islands and Costa Smeralda (80 miles). Sailing South we meet Bosa Marina (20 miles), the island of Mal di Ventre (34 miles) and Carloforte (36 miles). To the West, towards open sea, at 190 miles' distance we reach the Spanish archipelago of Baleari with the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and the beautiful Formentera, the ideal holiday place if you love open waters sailing.
